Nellie was special, but you will find a new dog to ease your heart in time. Not a replacement, but a successor.

Although, I've had 7 beagles now and it's difficult to consider a real dog after that. Each left a huge hole when they departed, and each new one has been a comfort and an occasional hair-pulling torment. They are little problem-solving insatiable appetites on 4 legs.

Somewhere out there is a beagle who wants a life of luxury. Walk carefully. You may be it.

So lovely. So your dog helped you find the place which eventually you will call home. In India, they have a concept called "rna" which is a debt that people can have to each other or to an animal, or vice versa. I think your dog had a debt to you (and probably worked the other way too), which was completed when she saw you'd be well settled in an appropriate space. Then, having fulfilled her debt to you, she was free to leave the planet. Although I suspect she is always close by, watching over you.

Hugs!

Marjie: I don't know if you remember when I called you so excitedly from a winding road in Lake Tahoe to tell you that I had decided to research a song that I loved, which I had put on my ipod - and had found after getting lost in reams of google facts, that: you had written it. And it was this song. Though I never asked you, I always thought it was about a dog. Beautiful and sad, it gets me every time.

At least you tried to fill the hole with those cute little creatures - I'm still trying.

Your friend djohns has said what I feel in my heart, but lacked in articulation. I have lost a succession of beagles myself and each leaves a deep wound (albeit some deeper than others). I am hurting for you now. I felt like I knew Nellie, but because your writing highlighted her quirks, I failed to realize the depth of your love for her. I do hope you rescue another in time. The need is great - for both of you. Like djohns, I can't imagine having another breed. Obedience is highly overrated. But whatever special dog lands in your home, their life will change for the better forever.

They were sweet and both could have been keepers but for the extremely loud barking!

You were winning them over and they definitely were enjoying the perks of being fostered at Casa Alonso by you, but, and I say this knowing what know; it’s going to be hard to fill the hole that NellieGirl, as I called her, left behind.

Nellie was something special, something very special and I think it’s going to take some very special dog 🐶 to be your next companion.

We miss you Nellie! ❤️

This is a beautiful post, Marjie. True and profound. I loved the song. Your lovely voice brought back the memories and surprise of hearing you sing in the Literary Man in Obidos. So beautiful, I almost fell off my chair.

I am a cat person, but even I would find myself manipulated by that wee cutie tucked in and sleeping away.

And iced mint tea is indeed awesome. I have some mint teabags squirrled away; might just have to sun-brew some of them this weekend...

PS, after our Princess died at the ripe old age of 17, it was roughly 3.5 years before our current rascals adopted us. This was mainly because my mother didn't want any more cats, but you know how it is: when the heart is ready, the furbaby will come.

Ah now. So it was tea, toast and tears for breakfast for me...I was lulled into a false sense of security by thinking it might be about summer...Snort!

Ah well, lovely to read your writing once again, I look forward to it every Wednesday morning (Oz time.) I'm sorry the struggle is still real. Sigh.

I can only offer Emily Dickinson's wise words:

When the Best is gone - I know that other things are not of consequence - The Heart wants what it wants - or else it does not care -

And a virtual hug.

You have been through so much in the time I have known you. And these, the most recent hits, are a lot to absorb. Good to take time for you, and for the right dog who will fill your heart..

Oh, and on the Chi...mine took several months to find his place in the pack, and move past his nickname of TT (tiny tryant), aka: little master of the universe or he who would be king. They can do a surprisingly good job of growing on you.

I have never heard such a beautiful song💓. Got something in my eyes.

We said goodbye to our sweet little Beagle Girl Holly in February. The grief is real💔. She was the love and light in my life.

Jenny came home in April❤️. She is our 7th Beagle. We are so grateful that we get to do this again. How many more “agains” will there be? Each one of our “nose, with a dog attached” have been so special, there really are no words I could write to describe these amazing creatures that shared our lives.

You will know when you know💞.

Beautiful song. So glad you shared it. It's truly a keeper. And your story of knowing when it's time is a lesson hard learned but so true for each of us. I fostered a few dogs here and there, and very few stayed over the years. Knowing yourself on this deeper, but often painful level, is what makes the keepers so incredibly unique and special and hurts like hell when they pass. But, each of them is always there forever.
